KICA Schedules Special Meeting and Vote
As you probably know by now, the Kiawah Island Community Association
(KICA) will hold a special meeting at 1 pm on September 23, 2007 at
the East Beach Conference Center. The purpose of the meeting is to
vote on a proposal that would allow KICA to extend the KICA
Covenants to property it might purchase off-island and to designate
such property as common property under the covenants.
The authorization would apply to a
“one-time purchase of land in the vicinity of Kiawah Island that may
be used for boat storage, commercial pass operations and other
services to be provided by the association or for other member use.”
The purchase is to be funded from the operating surplus, which is
expected to be $3m at the end of 2007. (Mailing to Property Owners,
August 10, 2007)
Extending the KICA Covenants to any property is a serious matter
since that property can then be referred to as part of Kiawah
Island. A “yes” vote will allow KICA to extend the covenants to an
as yet undesignated parcel of property without further review by or
approval of the membership. For more information on extending the
covenants see Article II, Community Association Covenants. (Click
here to view.)
The Covenants require KICA or the Developer (KRA) to provide boat
storage at a reasonable cost. While KRA took over administration of
the Kestrel Court boat storage facility from KICA in March, KRA will
continue to provide boat storage at that location for the
foreseeable future.
Property Owners are urged to attend KICA’s Open Forum scheduled for
August 21, 7:00-8:30 pm at the Sandcastle. Property owners will be
able to ask questions of the Board of Directors and share any
concerns they may have at that meeting. KICA is providing an audio
link to the meeting for any property owners unable to attend the
meeting in person. Call 843-768-9194 for dial-in information.
We urge all property owners who can to attend the Open Forum in
person. We urge those unable to attend to take advantage of the
audio link KICA is providing. The deadline for returning
proxies/ballots is September 19, 2007, more than three weeks after
the Open Forum. On August 21, ask your unresolved questions, voice
any concerns you may have, and listen to what other property owners
have to say.
Your vote is very important. Extending the covenants to any piece of
property is a serious step. The property will take our name and
further define our Island identity.
