April 21, 2004 Announcement from the KPOG Board of Directors

At the last Town Council Meeting on April 13th, the council decided to seriously consider changing the Mayor and Council Member’s term of office from 2 to 4 years. They decided to hold two public hearing on the issue on May 10th prior to the regular Council Meeting on the 11th when they will decide on passage of the 1st reading of an ordinance on the subject.

There are many factors to consider when deciding on the term of office.  To name a few:

  • Will fewer candidates run for office with the longer term?

  • Will the Mayor and Council Members be as responsive to public opinion with the longer term of office?

  • Do the Mayor and Council Member’s term of office need to be staggered to prevent a loss of continuity with all being replaced in one election?

Kiawah is unique in many ways and the above questions need to be explored and discussed by all property owners. While the KPOG Board was not yet ready to recommend a position on the question of term length, the Board was definitely opposed to making a change on the current schedule. They strongly recommend that the Council take proper time to educate the public, allow discussion, get feedback and only then seriously consider a change.

Above all, attend the Public Hearings at 1:00 and 7:00 PM at the Town Hall on May 10, and voice your opinion.
