August 12th Announcement from the KPOG Board of Directors

The following actions took place at the August 12th Kiawah Island Town Council meeting:

  • As reported in the July/August issue of TALK, the proposed widening of the Kiawah Island Parkway is preliminary. Charlie Lipuma, Chairman of the Planning Commission, said the Town started doing traffic studies in 2000. Factoring in development growth, the parkway should reach capacity by 2015.
  • Kiawah resident Betty McCullough made a presentation proposing a cultural center be built on Kiawah. She said KRA has agreed to donate the land for Freshfields.
  • Council voted unanimously to table discussion of rental rule enforcement until such time that an ordinance was presented for rental regulations. Councilman Fishman commented that Council has sat on this issue for long enough.
  • Councilman McIver stressed the need for better arrangements with Charleston County deputies, stating they have not been around when needed. McIver cited an assault occurrence where deputies did not respond and lack of support with control of speeding on Kiawah roads.
  • Councilman Bennett attempted to read a statement near the end of the meeting.

After being interrupted several times by other Council members, and prior to completion of his statement, Councilman Fishman moved adjournment. Mayor Wert seconded. Bennett has offered his entire presentation as a "letter to the editor" in the next issue of TALK.
