KPOG Alert: Update on Johns
Island Roads
(continued...)
The Maybank Corridor
The Maybank Corridor is that portion of Maybank Highway that
extends from the Stono River Bridge to its intersection with Main
and Bohicket Roads at the Big Pig.
Last spring, the City of Charleston and its consultants conducted a
series of planning exercises with the greater Johns Island community
to seek input on its Plan for Johns Island and on improvements to
the Maybank Corridor. The result of those exercises was a proposal
for a series of interlocking grid-like streets to alleviate traffic
on Maybank Highway. The City’s resulting plan for Maybank Highway
was well received by the local community. (Click

Subsequently, Charleston County Roadwise, the county program for
managing road and highway projects funded by the half cent sales
tax, developed an alternate plan to five lane Maybank Highway from
the Stono River Bridge to Main Road (http://www.ccroadwise.org/maybank_wide.html).
These competing
plans were the subject of the Post and Courier’s front page story on
Sunday, February 24th (Click

According to that article, “While County Council controls the
half-cent sales tax money, the city of Charleston also can approve
or reject the Maybank Plan. . . In an interview last week, [Mayor]
Riley said he thought RoadWise “is doing a great job,” but said a
straight four- to five- land highway “would act and feel like a
commercial artery.” He said he was confident that a grid could
handle high volumes of traffic, adding that what happens to Maybank
Highway will define Johns Island’s development for generations.”
County and City planning and transportation staff are now working
together to merge the competing visions. Share your comments on the
proposals at
http://www.ccroadwise.org/public_comments.html. KPOG urges
all property owners to stay abreast of developments in these
projects and to provide appropriate agencies their input as plans
are refined. |
