KPOG Alert: Update on Johns
Island Roads (continued...)
Of the 346 respondents, 66% favored a new Cross Island Parkway,
rather than widening either Bohicket or River Roads. This Cross
Island Parkway would run from the intersection of Bohicket and River
Roads, between them to Maybank Highway. Using traffic projections
for 2030, this solution provided better traffic relief than widening
Bohicket or River Roads. The Updated Cross Island Expressway Study
can be found at:
http://www.ccroadwise.org/cross_island_parkway_study.html.
RoadWise is now seeking additional input on the study update.
Feedback forms are available at:

Feedback will be accepted until March 7.
Extension of I-526 from Rte. 17 to the James Island Connector
I-526 currently ends at Route 17, although the original plans
call for extending the highway across the Stono River and Johns
Island to the James Island Connector. Charleston County Council has
$420 m committed from the State Transportation Infrastructure Bank
to complete this section of the “loop” around Charleston. Work on
the environmental impact statement will begin in March.
The Coastal Conservation League (CCL) and the Concerned Citizens of
the Sea Islands recently hired Glatting Jackson Kercher Anglin,
traffic engineering consultants, to work with the Charleston
community to develop alternatives to the plan, first drafted in the
1960s. After a series of design “charettes” or interactive sessions
with elected officials, community leaders, and residents, they have
developed a series of engineering alternatives that consider current
and projected traffic patterns, as well as new planning concepts.
The CCL will make a presentation at the Sandcastle at 7:30 pm on
Wednesday, March 26 to share these alternatives with Kiawah Island
property owners and others who are interested in the project.
Regardless of where you stand on the I-526 extension, this is an
opportunity for property owners to understand the issues involved
and the new community planning and design processes being used in
the Charleston area.
